Zanussi washing machines are a popular brand manufactured by the Electrolux group. Below is a list of the most common error codes that you will find on a Zanussi washing machine with a digital display.
E11 Zanussi washing machine error code (water inlet)
The machine has detected a problem with the water intake. This error code will usually be displayed on the machine when the rum has little to no water inside.
What to do:
- Check the water supply tap is in the on position
- Make sure there are no kinks or bends in the water inlet hose
- Check the water solenoid valve for blockages
- Replace the water inlet valve
If the above checks don’t resolve the error code, the printed circuit board (PCB) may need replacing.
E13 Zanussi washing machine error code (leak detected)
The machine has detected a leak somewhere. This error code is displayed when the water leak detection device in the base of the machine is triggered.
The first thing you should do is remove the water from the base of the machine and then run a test cycle whilst you inspect for any obvious leaks.
Common areas to check for leaks on a Zanussi washing machine:
- The door seal
- The water inlet
- Drain pump housing
- Holes in the drum
- The drum seal
On some machines, it may be possible to remove the bottom half of the machine, which makes inspecting for leaks much easier.
E21, E23, E24 Zanussi washing machine error code (drain error)
The machine has not drained the water in the allocated time. If a Zanussi washing machine struggles to drain the water away within 5 minutes, it will give up and display the E21 error code.
The first thing you should check is for blockages in the drain pump filter, which can usually be accessed on the bottom right of the machine.
Other possible reasons for this error code:
- Blockage in the sump pipe
- Blockage in the water waste pipe
- blocked spigot under the sink
If the machine has no blockages then it’s time to replace the drain pump, which will usually solve the error code.

E33, E35, E36, E37, E39 Zanussi washing machine error code (pressure switch)
The machine has detected that too much water is in the drum. The pressure switch is a safety device that measures the air pressure inside the rum and figures out when to stop filling.
If there is too much water in the drum, the pressure switch will trigger which stops the cycle and display an error code in the E33 – E39 range.
Things to check:
- Check for holes in the pressure switch pipe
- Replace the pressure switch
- Printed circuit board
If the machine does not have any water in the drum and the error code is displayed, this indicates a problem with the pressure switch itself or a faulty printed circuit board.
E40, E41, E42, E43, E44, E45 Zanussi washing machine error code (door lock)
The machine has detected that the door has not locked before a cycle. If the machine can’t lock the door after the started button is pressed, the error code will display on the LCD and the cycle will end.
The easiest way to fix the Zanussi E40 – E45 error codes is to replace the door interlock. This can be done by removing the door seal and unscrewing the door lock from the front of the machine.
It’s a good idea to inspect the wiring leading to the door lock as the connector block can often become burnt meaning no power is going to the door lock.
Both the Zanussi E40 error code and the E41 error code are very common and most Zanussi washing machines will experience wither of them at some point.
If the door lock and the wiring are good, the control module will be faulty and will need to be replaced.
E51, E52, E53, E54 Zanussi washing machine error code (motor failure)
The machine has detected that the motor is not able to turn the drum. All Zanussi washing machine error codes starting with E5 relate to a problem with the motor.
What you should check:
- Check the carbon brushes
- Look for burns on the motor wiring
- Check the belt
- Replace the motor
If the fault code is not fixed after replacing the motor, the problem will be with the control module.
E61, E62, E66, E71 Zanussi washing machine error code (heater error)
The washing machine can’t heat the water inside the drum. Once the water has filled up inside the drum, the wash heater which is usually located at the rear of the drum will attempt to heat the water for the selected cycle.
If you have an E61 – E71 error code try the following:
- Check the wiring going to the heating element
- Replace the wash heater
- Replace the NTC on the heater
- Look for breaks in the wiring from the control module
If the error code persists after checking the above, the problem will be the printed circuit board (PCB).
E82, E83, E93, E94, E95, E96, E97 Zanussi washing machine error code (control module)
The machine has a faulty control module. The main printed circuit board is usually located behind the face of the display or at the bottom rear of the machine. It’s identifiable as the control board with the most wiring leading to and from it.
The only fix for these error codes is to replace the control module. Most Zanussi washing machine control modules come pre-programmed for the models that they fit.
